Do you need another smart-home hub?

Three different jobs can share one box

Matter controller: the application-level control role. Matter uses IP networking over transports such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread; it is not a replacement radio.[1][4]
Thread border router: routes between a Thread mesh and the wider local network. Thread is application-layer agnostic, so a Thread device is not necessarily a Matter device.[1][3]
Zigbee coordinator: establishes a Zigbee network. ZHA uses a compatible coordinator and integration; each Zigbee network has one coordinator. This is separate from the Thread border-router role.[2][1]

Wi-Fi is not an app compatibility label. A device may use a vendor cloud integration or Matter over Wi-Fi. Confirm the control protocol and your required features rather than inferring them from the network logo.[1][5]

Apple phone-only exception: Apple documents Matter control without a home hub on iPhones with iOS 18 or later. Thread-enabled iPhones can locally pair and manage Thread accessories, sometimes after accessory updates. That limited case is not evidence that a whole-home setup or every feature needs no hub; check Apple’s current guidance.[6]

What to ask before spending anything

What is the exact model, hardware generation, firmware and control protocol?
Which required actions appear in my chosen app — not just the manufacturer app?
Which controller, border router or coordinator roles does my existing hardware already provide?
Does the proposed bridge expose this device and these features? What remains vendor-only?
Which actions require internet, an account or a subscription? How will I safely check local operation?

These are planning questions, not completed checks. Matter allows local device control, but vendor setup requirements and feature coverage still need separate verification.[1] Keep local network and power failures separate from internet outages when planning your own checks. Do not test by interrupting safety-critical devices.
